This campaign which is managed by the Irish Heart Foundation has been running for 20 years raising vital funds to continue the Irish Heart Foundation's fight against heart disease and stroke. They collect all around Ireland in shopping centres and on street collections and hope to raise 650,000 euro for their CPR programme to promote emergency lifesaving skills in every community in Ireland. Their message is simple, the more people who know how to perform CPR, the more lives can be saved.

So why am I blogging about this weekend? Well the good news is that you can help. How?
Volunteering can be a valuable way to work within a community and gain some life experiences. For many people who are finishing work or want to contribute to a great cause, this is a great way to make a difference.
They are always looking for new volunteers to join the Happy Heart Team! You could have some fun, be part of a great team and meet new people. Here are just some ways you can get involved.

Become a volunteer - If you have a few hours to spare, they would be delighted to have you as part of the Happy Heart Weekend team on the day! If you volunteer, all you have to do is show up at the agreed time and collect those pennies. So sign up and they will be in touch soon.

Become a coordinator - this role would involve a more committed approach to Happy Heart Weekend Weekend but it is very rewarding! As a coordinator you would work closely with the regional manager and local volunteers in your area.

So be a good egg and help out Happy Heart Weekend, volunteer, donate some money and join them on Facebook.

March 2010: Dragons' Den Ireland

So it's about half way through the season of series 2 of RTE's Dragons' Den. I'm a little ambivalent about the show, I guess I do think it offers excellent exposure, potential investment and super mentoring for your business but on the other hand reality TV, by its very nature, tends to be a little nasty to the underdog. My argument would be why have the terrible projects on the show, just edit them out or don't let them make the short list but instead we watch some poor guy or gal or group being ridiculed and that's the part I don't like.

Having said all of that, I try not to miss the show particularly for the twitter chat among hundreds of other people also watching the show. Just add the hash tag #ddire to the end of your tweets and join the conversation. If you want to expand the conversation beyond your own followers, use a service like Twission (built by Dublin company WebStrong) where you enter the hashtag and your twitter handle to be met with a screen showing all the posts about the show from anyone using the hashtag. Usually it's a bit of fun, we give our own critique and worry and celebrate the decisions of the panel and those pitching. See you there on Thursday.

March 2010: Some help with the job hunt - online tips & apps

So you're still looking for work so maybe some of these online tools/services will help:

I suppose the first step in the search for work is dusting and shining up the CV. Well then maybe CV Cafe - a free tool that allows you to build your CV in minutes using a selection of templates might be the answer.

If you're looking for professional help then perhaps you might consider outsourcing the task to make sure that first impression lasts. Ruadhri McGarry from MyNewCV.ie is one just service and although the 125 euro might seem a little steep, it might just prove to be the best money spent in the long run.

So you get the interview, well done so now it's time to prepare as the saying goes 'to fail to prepare is to prepare to fail' so why not try out SonruVIP - an online interview preparation tool. They offer a range of services from free trial to full review and feedback on your performance so again worth a shot.

And don't forget to check out the corporate fashion code. Best of luck and happy job hunting.

Feb 2010: Back to Work Supports for setting up own Enterprise

Came across a pretty good scheme run by Department of Social Welfare in conjunction your Area Partnership Company which provides supports to people who've been in receipt of social welfare. The Back to Work Enterprise Allowance provides a cushion for those embarking on the road to self employment as it allows you to maintain 100% of your social welfare payments for year 1 and 75% for year 2. Mary's example is as follows:
If you plan to charge €200 per day then, apart from allowing yourself 20 days holidays in the year (bank holidays included!), you will need to be sure of getting work for literally every working day in order to hit a gross turnover of €47,000. And if you’re paying your own overheads, that translates into a net salary of €36,000.

To be honest I've a problem with both methods as they are focussed on what the freelancer wants and doesn't take other factors into consideration such as level of competition, market demand and its effect on pricing, comparisons between freelance and SME service costs etc. but it's an excellent starting point.
I think the real merit of this work is to use method 2 to demonstrate to prospective customers what actual equivalent annual salary arises from your daily freelance rate (if working at full capacity - we wish!). This might just help you make the case for your rate when people can directly compare it to their own monthly or annual salary.

Personally I use the opportunity cost method, which is the minimum I'm willing to accept for a project ranked against the other things I could be doing with my time i.e. is it worth it for me to put myself out to do x, y or z? That's of course when things are flying and I can afford to be fussy but as all freelancers out there know, there have been times that I've taken projects at sub-optimal rates for cash flow. Anyway, for me the most important thing is to do a job well and over deliver so there's less price sensitivity. I have clients who can ring me, brief me and be sure that a good job will be done without too much hand holding and they're invariably willing to pay more for that.

Need a start to Start-Up? Basically he's a positive thinker and has created an empire around personal development and performance excellence. We Irish tend to be sceptical about personal development and reaching one's potential, but I believe more good than bad can come of positive introspection. I know I could easily write a blog post every day about the latest and greatest guru in this field but the reason I'm bringing it to your attention is because I've attended one of his seminars. Back in the dotcom days when companies had lots of VC with little or no revenue streams, motivating and retaining staff was paramount and so 12 of us (half teckies half marketing/sales) we were duly packed off on the train to Belfast for a 2 day junket to attend one of his MindStore workshops. However cynical I may have been to begin with, by day's end I was converted and really believed I could do whatever I wanted in life (now that's value for money). He's extremely charismatic and a weird blend of Billy Connolly and maybe Michael O'Leary - extremely funny, great showman but with serious business savvy. Anyway, it was a great trip, needless to say the sales and marketers thought it fabulous, the coders just wanted to get back coding with less of yer 'I want to change the world and buy everyone a can of coke.' I don't remember much about the intricacies of the course but I do remember at the time writing on my wish list that I wanted to work less (part time), earn more and have more QT with my son and a few other personal wants. Anyway, needless to say weeks after the course, I mislaid my notes and got back on the treadmill of work work work. Then a few years later I was giving a class on management thinking when I was a lecturer in DIT and one of the topics was motivation so I went digging around and found the notes, I found my wish list and realised that I'd achieved every single one of them. So it's now time to write a new list almost ten years later. So I think I'll be popping along to see Mr. Jack Black's 'Prepare for the Upturn' in Dublin in the NCH in Dublin next Wednesday night (September 9th). For more information and online booking click here. Hopefully see you there. Or perhaps it's more fitting if I finish with a positive affirmation and sign off by saying 'I WILL see you there.'

Tasty Marketing Fellowship for Graduates in Ireland

The Bord Bia Marketing Fellowship.
Bord Bia and UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School have launched an innovative new programme for 25 lucky learners. Over 1000 places are been made available from the Institutes of Technology and Universities around Ireland. Given the skills shortages in the ICT, advanced sciences and green technology sectors, it comes as no surprise that the majority of places cater to these industries. A full list of places is available on the HEA website. So here goes:

CV Advice: The Basics
The most important thing to remember when writing your new CV is to realise exactly what it is, and what it is for. It is s a sales document for your personal brand, and its purpose, once in front of the right audience is to get you an interview, and to be a guide for that interview.
That means you control how you are perceived.
So, assuming you have name, contact details, education and reverse chronology of work experience, what must you have in the document?

No spelling mistakes or syntax errors
All word processing tools will point issues out, so use the technology. But proof read your document, better still have a third party proof it for you!
Put the phrase "Human Resources Manger" into a search engine and see how often simple mistakes are made and not spotted.

Benefits, not just Features
Don't just say that you worked at a given company, with a given job title pressing buttons. Be diligent in pointing out the benefits to the employer of each of your responsibilities.
"Led a team of Sales Agents.." is all very well, but is it as good as
"Led a team of Sales Agents to increased turnover and productivity within a three month period, expanding the team and exceeding all predefined targets"?

Less is More
Any more than three pages for almost any CV is a mistake unless you can justify it with Appendices or Matrices. A two page document is ideal for the majority of candidates, but don't let a job description 'bleed' from one page to another. Print out the document and pretend you're being interviewed. Does the interviewer have to flick between the bottom of one page and the top of the next? If so, you need to address this.

Look and Feel
Be simple, use a font such as Times or Arial, but don't use anything unusual as it may put the reader off. If the role requires creativity, it may be an opportunity to show off, but otherwise always play it safe.

Success Stories
Of late we've had a number of interesting successes with our clients. One client needed a CV updated to win an interview for the television show, The Apprentice. We tightened up the document, but we needed something spicy and different to make sure we got the interview, so we recreated The Apprentice Logo in the name of the candidate! Sure enough, the call was made and our client got the interview, one of tens from thousands of applicants.

About
mynewcv.ie is a Dublin based firm who use extensive recruitment and desktop publishing experience to create and/or improve jobseekers' CVs. It makes for interesting reading.

According to the results of a study by workplace psychologists OPP, women are making career decisions based on more solid information than their male colleagues.
Around a quarter (24&) of men reported they leave their careers to luck compared
to one in five women. The research was undertaken amongst 553 line managers and
1,002 general workers in the UK in May 2009. More than one in four (26%) men even
admit that opportunism is one of the most important factors when making career
decisions, compared to 19% of women.

Women are more likely to base career choices on their core abilities than men
are (47% compared with 41%). Women are also significantly more likely to use
psychometric tests to find out about a variety of factors, such as how to use natural
skills to greater effect (55%,) how personality impacts on colleagues (34%) and
even to identify their ideal vocation (22%).

The OPP study also looked at how line managers make decisions about people and,
revealed a silver lining for men. Women in more senior positions are much more
likely than men to trust their gut instinct when it comes to people decisions (42%
as compared with 36%). The result is a greater number of female line managers regretting the decisions they make. Only 22% of women would make the same people decisions if given a second chance, compared with 34% of men.

Few dates for your diary - redundancy but not redundant!

Well tomorrow's Think2Act conference takes place tomorrow and promises to be an excellent free event for anyone who has recently been made redundant or seeking change.

Mayo's Open Coffee Club are hosting their next event on Wednesday July 1st in the Civic Centre in Belmullet.

The 121 Marketing Network on LinkedIn will be having their First Wednesday event this Wednesday July 1st in the Mint Bar in the Westin Hotel in Dublin city centre. It talks about Confidence in Action a new initiative - a series of FREE seminars aiming to help companies and individuals navigate their way around this recession. So far events have been organised for Dublin, Cork and Limerick starting in September. They've assembled a very impressive line up of speakers ranging from economists, entrepreneurs and media hacks. It's a morning til night affair starting with breakfast at 9 and ending with networking from 6-7. All seminars are free but you have to register, you also have to register for each seminar individually. My registration submission returned an error but I think it's worth trying again. I have to say I really like this idea, LifeWise.ie provides an exciting range of products and services to suit the lifestyle of the Irish over-50s. Categories such as Health, Leisure, Travel, Finance and Retail feature editorials and special offers. They've lots of interesting news and blog posts such as advice for those recently made redundant offering tips and advice. I really hope George's site takes off and we at Flexitimers wish them all the best.

Flexitimers is now on Facebook

Just created a Flexitimers page on facebook so you're all very welcome to join us, add or start to discussions and generally network with other flexitimers throughout Ireland.

Made Redundant? Flexitimers is a closed network; employers or other professionals cannot search through profiles. Profiles are only viewable to employers whose project matches your profile.

Ivan: New Flexitimers site is launched, the media love it, and the response has been very positive. How happy are you with the media coverage?
Well obviously we're very pleased and I think the reason is because Flexitimers is a good news story during recession overload. Everyday we are hearing and reading about the recession, job losses, redundancy and market uncertainty. Flexitimers is good news for a few reasons. Firstly, we have hit on a previously untapped sector with the recruitment industry in Ireland being a mix of web2.0 and project work which is very new and hugely necessary. Secondly, project and indeed flexible work tended to be quite siloed for example IT and design sectors largely but our intention was to offer flexibility to a broader occupational base. Traditionally I suppose IT and design were easy outsource targets because the output was so tangible but there is no reason why any company cannot outsource less tangible operations/functions such as PR, sales and marketing, admin, legal and financial roles. It all goes back to people skills and effective management and just because someone is sitting in your office 40 hours per week doesn't always translate into an optimal solution. Thirdly, we practice what we preach: I live in Wexford and co-founder Dervla Cunningham is based in Dublin and we have managed to research, develop and launch a business by working remotely.

Ivan: The Recruitment industry in Ireland is changing. What role will Flexitimers play in the future?
Of course the recruitment industry is changing because it had to, it is a bit like the construction or property sector during the boom which was synonymous with over-charging and under-delivering. Today, no company can afford to pay for mediocrity whether that is in suppliers, staff or services.
To get back to recruitment, we believe the employment model is changing and the focus will be less on hiring full time permanent staff but will be more project driven. It is a win-win situation for employers because they get to pick and choose the best people for each task and manage their overheads more effectively.
Flexitimers' role is to provide companies with access to a pool of skilled and experienced professionals who are actively seeking project work. Traditionally companies tend to find project workers through their own networks but this is random and unfortunately the best people aren't necessarily within your reach. On Flexitimers you can hire beyond your network and not compromise on quality or caliber. I suppose, Flexitimers confounds false economy and mediocrity.

Ivan: The way we live and the way we work is not the same. Flexitimers seems to be accommodating this and applying it to recruitment?
Absolutely, as the line goes 'nobody ever said on their deathbed, I should have spent more time in the office.' But there is one key point I want to make here: just because you want to work flexibly doesn't mean you have to compromise your career. Take part-time work for example, typically available only in retail, catering and administrative jobs. Like I said earlier, Flexitimers is broadening that occupational base. How? We provide professionals with access to flexible positions i.e. contract, temporary, freelance, consulting and telework across a variety of roles so we're there to help anyone who has just been made redundant to earn income while they're in between jobs. Furthermore, more and more of these interim project workers who join the site for interim or stopgap work find it works better for them so now not only have they flexibility but also they're expanding their profile, career and portfolio.

Ivan: Flexitimers - what is the next step? What is the plan for the future?
I could tell you but I'd have to shoot you afterwards! Only joking, big plans and plenty of exciting developments. I suppose the biggest news at the moment is that our service is FREE to use which again reflects the dramatic changes in the recruitment industry. We'll of course want to build our brand and awareness over the coming months. In the background we are working on expansion plans both in terms of functionality and geography. I speak French, Spanish and basic Dutch so who knows, maybe I will be teleworking from a sunnier climate!

About Joy Redmond, co-founder of Flexitimers
Joy Redmond started her career in 1996 as Marketing Director of Newmedia, one of Ireland's first web design companies. She remained agency side working with Zartis.com and Campaign HTDS before moving client side to become online marketing manager of IngredientsNet.com (a joint venture between Fyffes and Glanbia). Before setting up Flexitimers with Dervla Cunningham, Joy was a lecturer in E-business, research and marketing in the Dublin Institute of Technology and was Course Director of the Masters in Business & Entrepreneurship. Joy also is a busy project worker doing consultant marketing and research for many blue chip companies in Ireland such as Bank of Ireland, eircom, NTL, Poster Plan and JCDecaux.
